In celebration of its 25^th anniversary, State of the Art Gallery partnerEd with Ithaca’s Fine Arts Booster Group in a fundraising raffle. State of the Art member artists donated original artwork (see images below) for the raffle and 20% of the money raised will go to the Fine Arts Booster Group, an affiliate of IPEI, the Ithaca Public Education Initiative, to support arts in the schools.

The gallery has a history of educational efforts in the arts and this year, in particular, wants to reach out to the community. FABG, established in 2001, serves all of the arts and all of the schools in the Ithaca City School District. It supports district programs and staff and advocates for increased student access, participation, and equity in the arts programs.

Recognizing twenty-five successful years as a cooperative art gallery in Ithaca, State of the Art artists see this as an opportunity not only to raise money for gallery maintenance, but to also encourage and help support Fine Arts programs in the schools.

Introspective

State of the Art artists Jane Dennis and Terry Plater will show their work in a two-person show titled “Introspective” at the gallery in July. Dennis uses sewn metal, collaged wood and printed paper to create sculpture about the mind. Plater’s paintings, in oils as well as water-based and dry media, tell or invite stories meant to challenge the mind as well as the eye.

Reception for the artists: Friday, July 11, 5-8pm, Gallery Night in downtown Ithaca

Show dates are July 2-27.

Imagine-David Watkins

“IMAGINE,” new photographic work by David Watkins, Jr., will feature abstracts, botanicals, landscapes and, in the words of the photographer, other stuff at the gallery during June. He says, “It would be difficult for me to pursue a single theme, or become so technically involved that only f-stops and shutter speeds were important. I am singularly interested in what an image can become.”

A reception will be held Friday, June 6, from 5-8pm. In addition, the artist will be at the gallery from noon-5pm on the following days: Sunday, June 8; Saturday, June 14; Sunday, June 22 and Sunday, June 29. Show dates: June 4-29, 2014.

eARTh at the Museum

An extension of our eARTh exhibition this month- more work from SOAG members examining the effect of climate change on our lives and our surroundings.

These exhibitions were made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and the Tompkins County Tourism Program.

eARTh- A Celebration

eARTh, the May show at State of the Art Gallery, is a unique collaboration with the Museum of the Earth in celebration of its tenth anniversary. 2014 also marks an anniversary for State of the Art–the gallery has been in the art business in Ithaca for twenty-five years. The two organizations are partnering for two exhibitions that reflect concerns about climate change. eARTh, at the gallery, will examine the state of our changing planet and the role gallery members play as artists and citizens.

Work in the show ranges from abstract to representational and features a variety of media: paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, collage and sculpture. Each artist will bring his or her unique sensibility to the theme. The second show of related work will be held at the museum.

Both the gallery and the museum are committed to examining the world around us through the prisms of art and science.

Approaching 60

Article in The Ithacan

When I was in college, my mentor, Jerome Zimmerman, once said “If anyone asks you how long it took you to make a sculpture, you should say ‘all my life’.” I am paraphrasing from memory, of course. But it rang true then, and even more so now, almost forty years later.

Looking toward my 60th birthday later this year, I have chosen to look back at my life’s work so far. About half the show is sculptures from the decades up to 2010. The rest is newer mixed media works completed since my last solo show at State of the Art Gallery.

It has been an interesting and rewarding journey. I have produced sculptures that are small and intimate as well as some large scale, site-specific, outdoor pieces. Some works took years to complete, while others came together in just a few hours. (The time frame, by the way, did not always correspond to the size!) As I have matured along with the artwork, I have often observed that we artists tend to go back and revisit the same issues and themes repeatedly. Yet each time I find myself looking again at an old theme or material or image, I find the artwork produced has changed because I have changed. So the journey is not one of coming back full circle. It is more of a spiral – when I look back at an old idea, I am seeing it from a new plane.

My artistic passion continues to include a love of combining natural and human made-objects. The work in this exhibit brings together many of the elements I have been exploring over those years: a commitment to re-using found objects; a love of the inherent beauty of the materials; and an exploration of emotional issues dear to my heart. Each work is carefully and lovingly assembled, oiled, polished, and sometimes stitched, to bring them to life.

As I approach 60, I can see that aging brings much that is good, but it also presents challenges, and one of those is that more people in my life are facing illness. I lost my father to lung cancer eight years ago. And recently several friends have faced or are currently facing this disease. To recognize and thank a local agency which is helping many people face the challenges of cancer, I have decided to donate 20% of all sales from my show to The Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes. Please join me in supporting their vital work in our community.

Exhibition Agreement

1 The artist/exhibitor agrees to deliver their work(s) to the Gallery at the published date. and time. The exhibitor will abide by the rules of the gallery regarding presentation and suitability for hanging as stated in the Call for Entries. Final approval of the criteria is the responsibility of the Gallery Board of Directors.

2 The Gallery will provide an exhibition opening/reception for the artists with refreshments and an Award Ceremony. Exhibition announcements will be provided by the Gallery and sent to the Gallery list. Show announcements will also be posted on the gallery web site and Facebook.

3 While the State of the Art Gallery, its members and agents, will make reasonable efforts to protect the work(s) of an exhibitor, the Gallery cannot indemnify the work(s) against loss or damage. In submitting and agreeing to exhibit the work(s) in the Gallery the exhibitor agrees that the State of the Art Gallery, its members, Board of Directors, or agents will not be held liable and will be held harmless should there be damage or loss of work(s).

4. The exhibitor agrees that the work(s) of the exhibitor may be reproduced for the purpose of advertising the exhibition for a period not to exceed five years.

5 It is agreed that the exhibitor may conduct sale of the work(s) from the exhibition. The Gallery will act as facilitator through it’s members who staff the Gallery during regular gallery hours. For the service, the Gallery receives a 30% commission on the sale of all displayed work.

6. The show ends Sunday, March 30. Work must be picked up between noon and 5pm that day. The gallery cannot store the works.

James Burlitch’s photo “Glimpse of Peek-a-Boo Trail” was winner of the People’s Choice Award.

2014 marks “The 25th Annual Juried Photography Show” at State of the Art Gallery, which is also celebrating its 25th year in the art business in Ithaca. This event attracts photographers from the Ithaca area and beyond and entries selected for the exhibition represent numerous and varied ways that photographers are currently working.

This year’s Prize Judge is Roger Freeman, Professor of Photography Emeritus and former chair of the Department of Photography at Alfred University, made the following awards:

25th Anniversary Members’ Show: Part II

At State of the Art, February marks the second month of the gallery’s 25^th anniversary celebration with two shows. In the main gallery ten members will show paintings, photographs, sculpture and prints and in the Salon, new member Syau-Cheng Lai will have a solo show of large scale drawings on paper.

New gallery member Syau-Cheng Lai will have a solo show of large scale drawings on paper in the Salon. She describes these drawings as both loose and meticulous and integrating a variety of media; the pieces conjure territoire primodial et extraterrestre.

“25^th Anniversary Celebration: Part 2” opens February 5 and runs through March 2, 2014. A reception for the artists will be held Friday, February 7, 5-8pm, Gallery Night in downtown Ithaca.

In addition, the gallery has produced a large color/B&W book of its twenty-nine artists and their art to commemorate the anniversary. The book will be available at the gallery as a premium for donor support.
