Spitznagel and Vrana

The prints and paintings that make up Vrana & Spitznagel create personal moments that give visibility to emotions and the psyche. By applying abstraction, both artists develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based on imagination and subjective thought. This artwork invites the viewer into a conversation between the conscious and the subconscious.

Ethel Vrana has been an artist in the Tompkins County area for over 30 years. “My paintings,” she comments, “continue to explore color, form, and space using an abstract approach, evoking meaningful fictive worlds for viewers to experience.”

James Spitznagel has been living and creating art in Ithaca for nearly twenty years. Regarding this exhibit, Spitznagel states, “I am happy and honored to be a member of State of the Art Gallery. I am excited about sharing a show with Ethel; it will give both of us an opportunity to have our art seen locally, in the place where we live and work.”
The reception, Friday, August 7, 5-8pm, free to the public, will be part of First Friday Gallery Night, a monthly, walkable tour of downtown Ithaca art galleries. Gallery hours are Wed.– Fri., 12-6pm and Sat. & Sun., 12-5pm.

Vrana & Spitznagel will be on view until August 30, 2015. In addition, the exhibition will be supported by new artwork from State of the Art Gallery members, including paintings, drawings, and sculpture. The Dreamer That Remains

An Exhibition of New Paintings by James Spitznagel

 July 3-28, 2013

This solo show will feature forty-five recent paintings which, the artist states, create personal moments that give visibility to emotions and the psyche.  By applying abstraction, Spitznagel develops forms that do not follow logical criteria but are based on imagination and subjective thought.  This artwork invites the viewer into a conversation between the conscious and the subconscious.

A reception for the artist will be held Friday, July 5,  Gallery Night in downtown Ithaca, from 5 to 8pm at the gallery.

Four Dimensions

FOUR DIMENSIONS, the first exhibition of 2011, will showcase the four new members of State of the Art: Mary Ann Bowman, Ileen Kaplan, Janet Byer Sherman and James Spitznagel. Bowman will show ceramics and photographs, Kaplan and Byer Sherman will exhibit paintings and Spitznagel will show digital abstract prints.

A reception for the artists will be held Friday, January 7 from 5-8pm. A wine tasting will be provided by Bet the Farm Winery (http://www.betthefarmny.com/) from Aurora, NY. In addition to this reception, a second reception will be held at the gallery on Friday, January 21 also from 5-8pm in conjunction with Ithaca’s LIGHT IN WINTER festival. Then, on the last day of the show, Sunday January 30 at 3pm, the WOMEN’S CHORALE OF 171 CEDAR, a singing group to which Ileen Kaplan belongs, will give a concert at the gallery. The Chorale is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2011, by having a series of small salon-type concerts in various venues and they have chosen the State of the Art Gallery for one of their performances.

Show dates for FOUR DIMENSIONS are January 5-30, 2011.
