At State of the Art, February marks the second month of the gallery’s 25th anniversary celebration with two shows. In the main gallery ten members will show paintings, photographs, sculpture and prints and in the Salon, new member Syau-Cheng Lai will have a solo show of large scale drawings on paper.

New gallery member Syau-Cheng Lai will have a solo show of large scale drawings on paper in the Salon. She describes these drawings as both loose and meticulous and integrating a variety of media; the pieces conjure territoire primodial et extraterrestre.

 “25th Anniversary Celebration: Part 2” opens February 5 and runs through March 2, 2014.  A reception for the artists will be held Friday, February 7, 5-8pm, Gallery Night in downtown Ithaca.

In addition, the gallery has produced a large color/B&W book of its twenty-nine artists and their art to commemorate the anniversary. The book will be available at the gallery as a premium for donor support.

2015 Photo Show Call for Entries

Exhibit Dates: Wednesday, March 4– Sunday, March 29, 2015 

Up to $600 may be awarded at the discretion of the prize judge.

Submission Deadline: Friday, February 13, 2015, by 5pm.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Each entrant may submit up to two (2) works.
  • All work should be reasonably current (within the last 3 years) and original.
  • If accepted into the show, the work must be delivered ready to hang (matted, framed with glass or plexiglass in front and with a wire or suitable, secure hardware for hanging in the back).
  • A photographic process must have been used in the production of the work. (Scanned work is acceptable, digital art that did not originate from a photographic process-is not).
  • The work should not have been submitted to SOAG in the past.
  • Current SOAG members and their immediate families are not eligible to exhibit in this show.
  • The Entry Fee of $35.00 is non-refundable and does not guarantee that your work will be accepted into the show.
  • The Entry Fee can be paid by PayPal

SUBMISSION OF WORK

  • Contact Information: List the Artist Name, Address, phone number, and e-mail address in the body of the e-mail.
  • Images of up to two (2) works can be submitted. They must be jpegs at 150 pxi, between 800 and 1200 pixels on the long side and labeled with the artist’s name, followed by the image number 01 or 02. (example: d.watkins01.jpg, d.watkins02.jpg)
  • An image list (Filename, Title, Size, Medium, Price) must also be submitted with all entries.
  • If submitting by e-mail is problematic, please send a CD with your fee and all information as outlined above. CD’s cannot be returned. Do not send prints.

ACCEPTED WORK: Deadline and Notifications

  • All entries must be received by 5pm Friday, Feb.13th and will be jury-reviewed by Monday, Feb. 16th, 2015. Entrants will be notified by e-mail of acceptance or rejection.
  • The exhibit will be curated by members of the gallery. After installation a Judge from outside     the gallery will determine prizes and how the prize money will be distributed. Winners may be notified privately prior to the opening reception so that they may plan to attend the award ceremony. The awards will be presented at 6:30pm during the opening reception Friday, March 6, 2015.

DELIVERY of ACCEPTED WORK to THE GALERY

The work, ready for hanging, must be delivered to the gallery in person or by a designated substitute on:

Sunday, March 1, 2015 between noon and 5 pm; or

Monday, March 2, 2015. between noon and 4 pm.

  • Work cannot be accepted after 4pm Monday as installation of the show begins shortly after.
  • Work may not be shipped or mailed to the gallery.
  • The gallery retains the right to deny access to the show if the images delivered are substantially different from those submitted to the jury or, if the work is not ready for hanging.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Submissions to the SOAG 25th Annual Juried Photography Show shall imply an agreement on the part of the artists to all conditions of this prospectus. Permission for SOAG to photograph accepted works for publicity, education, and reference purposes is assumed.

SALES

Sale of the work is encouraged. Work will be offered for sale with the understanding that there is a 30% commission for each sale. Work that is sold during the show should remain on display until the end of the show. Exceptions may be made for sales to out of town buyers.

INSURANCE

While the State of the Art Gallery, its members and agents will make every effort to protect

your work, we cannot indemnify you against loss or damage to your work. In submitting to

the show you agree that the State of the Art Gallery is not liable and must be held harmless if

your work is damaged or lost.

PICK-UP of ART at the END of the SHOW

  • All works must be retrieved personally by artists or designated associates on:

  • Please understand that the gallery has no facility to store your work.

From the Juror,

 
In a way, I hate being a juror because
 
1) you make a few people happy, and everybody else is unhappy and hates you, and   because
 
2)you’re judging a person’s whole career, in effect, on the basis of one or two or three pieces, and because
 
3)winning competitions is not what art is about. It’s not why we look at art, or why we create it.
 
However, I had a job to do.
 
First of all, why seven first prizes, and five honorable mentions? This exhibition really is very good, with a high level of quality throughout, and, at the same time, the range of styles and media is so great that, given these two factors, it seemed almost absurd to say, for example, that this very realistic landscape or still life watercolor was “better” than that completely abstract painting or construction in wood or metal or wax, hanging right next to it.
 
So I tried to respect each genre and style and choose those works that pushed that particular style or genre and found a new potential in them.
 
Obviously, my judgements were still, in the end, subjective, and I can’t explain or justify that.
 
However, I can say that this is a terrific show – not only is the quality high, but that range of style and medium make it continually interesting and surprising. And that kind of diversity and quality is typical of State of the Art, a wonderful institution.

Small Works Show

 

State of the Art hosts its Second Annual Small Works Show during December.  This is an exciting and varied show featuring such media as oil pastel, oil on canvas, oil on wood, acrylic on veneer, watercolor, pen and ink, metal prints, linoleum prints, etching, oil and sterling silver leaf, wax and gypsum sculpture and more. 

Frank Robinson, former Director of the Johnson Museum at Cornell University, judged more than 80 works of art by 35 artists and awarded $600 in prizes. A reception for the artists was held Friday, December 6 from 5-8pm with the awards ceremony at 6:30pm.  Show dates are December 4-29, 2013. 

SOAG is located at 120 W. State Street in Ithaca.  There is curbside parking and the gallery is ADA accessible.  Hours:  Wed. – Fri., 12-6pm and Sat. & Sun., 12-5pm.  Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.  Contact info:  607-277-1626 and www.soag.org

OLIO is State of the Art ‘s second of its two annual members’ shows.  Members will exhibit paintings, watercolors, prints, photographs, drawings, mixed media pieces, sculpture, ceramics, collage, and other three-dimensional work. A reception for the artists will be held Friday, November 1, Gallery Night in downtown Ithaca, from 5-8pm.

State of the Art features artists of the Greater Ithaca Art  Trail October 2-27,  2013.  This is a great chance to preview the work of the forty-eight Art Trail artists in one place before choosing which studios to visit.  Seeing the actual work often has a greater impact than just viewing it on a computer screen and every year many people do their  “Art Trail research” at the gallery.  Art Trail open studio weekends are October 5/6 and 12/13.  And in the Salon, we have the monthly members’ show of paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, collage, sculpture and more!  A reception for all participating artists will be held Friday, Oct. 4, 5-8pm.  Gallery hours:  Wed. – Fri., 12-6pm and Sat. & Sun., 12-5pm.

The showing fee will be $35 for a single piece, or $50 for two pieces.  Sculptural “sets” that will fit on a single pedestal are counted as one piece.

Laurie Anderson is a world-renowned performance artist whose recent work, Dirtday! is a look at politics, theories of evolution, families, history, and animals set against a detailed and lush sonic landscape.

Dr. Roald Hoffmann, the Frank H.T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters Emeritus at Cornell University and 1981 chemistry Nobel laureate, is also a writer of poetry, plays, and essays.

PRI’s Artist-in-Residence, John Gurche, is a world-renowned paleo-artist who combines his knowledge of anatomy and paleontology with artistic craftsmanship to recreate vivid worlds of past life based on bones, fossils, and other remains.

The discussion will be led by Barbara Mink, artist, founder, and artistic director of the Ithaca-based nonprofit Light in Winter Festival from 1999-2011 and member artist of the Ithaca-based nonprofit State of the Art Gallery.

This program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
