From the Juror,

In a way, I hate being a juror because

1) you make a few people happy, and everybody else is unhappy and hates you, and   because

2)you’re judging a person’s whole career, in effect, on the basis of one or two or three pieces, and because

3)winning competitions is not what art is about. It’s not why we look at art, or why we create it.

However, I had a job to do.

First of all, why seven first prizes, and five honorable mentions? This exhibition really is very good, with a high level of quality throughout, and, at the same time, the range of styles and media is so great that, given these two factors, it seemed almost absurd to say, for example, that this very realistic landscape or still life watercolor was “better” than that completely abstract painting or construction in wood or metal or wax, hanging right next to it.

So I tried to respect each genre and style and choose those works that pushed that particular style or genre and found a new potential in them.

Obviously, my judgements were still, in the end, subjective, and I can’t explain or justify that.

However, I can say that this is a terrific show – not only is the quality high, but that range of style and medium make it continually interesting and surprising. And that kind of diversity and quality is typical of State of the Art, a wonderful institution.

State of the Art features artists of the Greater Ithaca Art  Trail October 2-27,  2013.  This is a great chance to preview the work of the forty-eight Art Trail artists in one place before choosing which studios to visit.  Seeing the actual work often has a greater impact than just viewing it on a computer screen and every year many people do their  “Art Trail research” at the gallery.  Art Trail open studio weekends are October 5/6 and 12/13.  And in the Salon, we have the monthly members’ show of paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, collage, sculpture and more!  A reception for all participating artists will be held Friday, Oct. 4, 5-8pm.  Gallery hours:  Wed. – Fri., 12-6pm and Sat. & Sun., 12-5pm.

Then Sunday check out the Artist Panel
Sunday | September 22 | 2:00pm-4:00pm Museum of the Earth with a  reception in the Museum to follow.

Laurie Anderson is a world-renowned performance artist whose recent work, Dirtday! is a look at politics, theories of evolution, families, history, and animals set against a detailed and lush sonic landscape.

Dr. Roald Hoffmann, the Frank H.T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters Emeritus at Cornell University and 1981 chemistry Nobel laureate, is also a writer of poetry, plays, and essays.

PRI’s Artist-in-Residence, John Gurche, is a world-renowned paleo-artist who combines his knowledge of anatomy and paleontology with artistic craftsmanship to recreate vivid worlds of past life based on bones, fossils, and other remains.

The discussion will be led by Barbara Mink, artist, founder, and artistic director of the Ithaca-based nonprofit Light in Winter Festival from 1999-2011 and member artist of the Ithaca-based nonprofit State of the Art Gallery.

This program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Of the Earth

“Of the Earth” is a two-person show of work by gallery member Carol Ast and her invited guest artist Isabella Jacob.  Jacob says her current work is a series “air/ice/rock”, an ongoing theme interpreting the most elemental aspects of our physical world.   About her work, Ast says, that in addition to the landscapes she has painted in pastels over the years, she has begun to paint oyster shells which, when scrubbed, reveal unexpected, subtle colors and fascinating forms.

A reception for the artists will be held Friday, August 2 with a wine tasting hosted by Americana Vineyards.

Show dates:  July 31-September 1, 2013.

The Dreamer That Remains

An Exhibition of New Paintings by James Spitznagel

 July 3-28, 2013

This solo show will feature forty-five recent paintings which, the artist states, create personal moments that give visibility to emotions and the psyche.  By applying abstraction, Spitznagel develops forms that do not follow logical criteria but are based on imagination and subjective thought.  This artwork invites the viewer into a conversation between the conscious and the subconscious.

A reception for the artist will be held Friday, July 5,  Gallery Night in downtown Ithaca, from 5 to 8pm at the gallery.

Heaven and Earth

Works on Paper by Rachel Gorman and Scout Dunbar

June 5-30, 2013

The works for this show,” the artists state, “reflect our explorations with paper and various materials in an attempt to create abstracted landscapes.  With a heavy focus in geometry and the organic form, we both strive to create 2 and 3-dimensional terrains defined by both detailed imagery and negative space.  We aim to create an environment saturated with imagery that speaks to the ethereal qualities of our world and universe.”

A reception for the artists will be held Friday, June 7, 5-8pm, with a wine tasting by Americana Vineyards.
